Community Service
Community service departments or organizations are typically involved in coordinating and implementing initiatives that address the needs of the community, promote social welfare, and facilitate community development. These departments can exist within government agencies, non-profit organizations, or community-based groups.
Functions
- Production and provision of professionally compiled psychosocial pre-sentence reports to magistrates and judges in criminal courts to aid them in making informed decisions;
- Conducting field visits at placement institutions to supervise compliance with community service court orders;
- Performing community corrections with a view to rehabilitate, reintegrate, and facilitate skills acquisition by offenders thereby sustaining peace and security, two critical prerequisites for stimulating the economy;
- Capacity development for Community Service Officers and stakeholders
- Organising and participating in public campaigns on community service at district, provincial and national level; and
- Data collection and management for the Community Service Information Management System
